12 Tips to Achieve Positive Habits!

It’s that time of year when many are thinking about goals for their New Year’s resolutions.  Here are 12 tips to help you stick to your resolutions.  And remember – you can start developing positive habits any time of the year!


1.  Choose specific, realistic goals.  Break a lofty goal into smaller steps.

2.  Consider starting one positive habit at a time to focus your efforts until it becomes routine.

3.  Find social support.  Doing activities with others can be fun, and you can encourage one another!  Connect with others who are supportive of your goals.

4.  Consider aiming low to establish your routine.  For example, if you want to do sit ups each evening, you might start with a goal of doing at least 1 sit up.  Doing the activity becomes less intimidating, and you can always do more if you'd like.  Increase the goal once you're used to the routine.

5.  Plan a reward for yourself when you reach a short-term goal, such as completing an activity for 30 days.  It’s fun to work toward a reward.  Of course, the reward should not conflict with the goal you're trying to achieve.

6.  Don't obsess.  There may be good reasons for missing a day now and then for certain positive habits.

7.  Regularly review your motivation for achieving your goal.

8.  Set reminders for your positive habit using your preferred reminders app or digital assistant.

9.  With New Year's resolutions, some people might commit initially, fall off track, and wait until the next year to start up again.  Instead, pick a day of the week to recommit.  You'll have 52 chances per year for a fresh start instead of just one.

10.  Don't be too hard on yourself if you're off your schedule.  Keep trying, and be persistent.  Log your successes and challenges.  Be inspired by your past success.  Consider ways to overcome any recurring challenges.  It may be tough, but know that you will achieve your goal!
